June for Juanita Boat Day

15th July 2009-   **Important Notice**

After much consideration, the June for Juanita committee has made the decision to extend the fundraising period for June for Juanita, and to postpone the sailing venture 12 months for a start date of 1st June 2010. The decision was made in order to allow more time for important fundraising and to align more corporate sponsors with the initiative.

All sponsorship and pledges still stand and will be carried over to the new start date of 1st June 2010 for the sailing venture.

Thank you all for your support and if you would like any more information about this change of schedule, please contact June for Juanita.

Friday 19th September - Graeme Connors Concert

What a night to remember was the concert with Graeme Connors. A night of music and entertainment that is sure to go down as (and Graeme himself agrees) one of his most intimate and heart warming concerts ever. Without a supporting band, just the man and his guitar, Graeme gave us renditions of many of his hits and classics including 'Let the Cane Fields Burn', 'It's all Good', and 'Sicilian Born'. One lucky lady in the audience, who was turning 90, got her own personal rendition of the Irish classic 'Danny Boy'.

The night began for the Lindsay family with a Thai dinner with Graeme and his lovely wife Lyn. Supporting act, comedian Mark Gladman was also there, along with key members of the June for Juanita committee. It was a lovely dinner, if a bit rushed, as Graeme had to be whisked back to the concert hall to prepare for the show.

Eager fans began arriving early and spent some time browsing the Graeme Connors merchandise, buying tickets for the June for Juanita raffle, the prize being a BBQ kindly donated by Bunnings, and taking a look at the catamaran that is to carry David from Brisbane to Cairns next year. Soon it was time to enter the concert hall, and usherettes Inger and Jessica Kwiecien kindly showed everyone to their seats.

His lively clean humour with jokes about his kids and impersonations of Humphrey Bear, and Playschool presenters brought tears to the eyes of the audience (in a good way).

Then it was time for the main act, Graeme Connors himself. It was a heart warming experience shared by everyone in the audience. Graeme was on stage solo and acoustic, singing many of the audiences favorites and a couple of never before heard songs. He interspersed his music with humorous stories about the songs he has written, and about his early life as a budding entertainer. Insightful and entertaining, his stories about writing 'truckin' songs for Slim Dusty, being side stage as the supporting act for Kamal, and being terrified of his childhood nemesis 'the Metho Man', had the audience captivated.

At the end of his performance, the Lindsay family came onstage to present Graeme with a commemorative plaque as a thank you for his support, and to unveil the name of the catamaran that is to take David from Brisbane to Cairns- 'A Little Further North'. Then, as a special encore, Graeme performed the song that inspired the name, 'A little Further North Each Year'.

After the concert the crowd gathered for cake and coffee and Graeme's inexhaustible wit and personality shone through as he spent over an hour signing albums and talking to the many excited concertgoers. Many who had seen Graeme live before said that the June for Juanita concert was the most enjoyable they had been to and everyone agreed that it was all the better for being smaller and acoustic.

Meeting and talking with Graeme Connors, and listening to the stories and songs of a true entertainer, was a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable experience for all who attended. From everyone at June for Juanita, we thank Graeme for donating his time and talent. We hope to catch up with him again during the trip in 2009, in his hometown of Mackay, where hopefully we will again enjoy his company and his music.

1st July 2008-   June for Juanita officially Launched!

After a rocky start to the project with the postponement of the 1st June Launch due to bad weather, we  are please to announce a successful launch to the June for Juanita project. The Funday in the Park on 29th June went of without a hitch and we had a fantastic roll up of people who came along to enjoy the many games, activities, food and entertainment on offer.

Those old favorites the jumping castle and the petting zoo where great hits with the kids, and the girls at the face painting tent were kept busy all afternoon turning out tigers and butterflies by the dozen.

The Redlands 'BIG' Band provided some fantastic entertainment and was followed by the Bollywood Dancers who wowed spectators with their performance of traditional Indian dance. Even the kids had a crack at the Macherina- Bollywood style!

Many thanks to everyone who helped out at the event, in particular the Scouts and the Lions Club who provided food and beverages.

Most importantly, from the Lindsay Family and the RCHF, a huge thank you goes out to everyone who supported June for Juanita by attending the Funday. Your generosity is greatly appreciated and we hope to see you at future June for Juanita Fund-raising events.
